The Art of Seeing: a mindful approach to photography

This enjoyable, practical workshop will help you learn how to use photography to develop your capacity for mindful presence, and to use a mindful approach to photography to deepen your connection to the world around you and help you discover your innate creativity.  No knowledge of photography is needed (although it’s very useful if you have some!) and any camera will do – even a phone camera.  All you need is an open mind and an interest in how mindfulness can be applied to photography.

Upcoming dates for these workshops:

As I’ve been concentrating on exhibiting recently, workshops have been put on hold for the moment.  However, I can still offer personal tuition sessions, and if you have a ready-made group of people who would like a workshop, I’d be happy to provide one.

I offer tuition on a one-to-one or small group basis, and we meet on location with most of the session being taken up with a practical/instructional photowalk.  Tuition is available for any kind of camera, from DSLRs to point and shoots (you’d be amazed what you can do with these!). Creative photo walks

I am able to supply bespoke courses and workshops for groups of people, whether these are private individuals or corporate groups. These can be tailor-made to suit your requirements – please contact me to discuss your needs.

I’m also happy to travel to other parts of the UK to hold a workshop for you. My charges would include travel expenses and – if necessary – overnight accommodation. Please get in touch with me and once we’ve discussed your needs I’ll send you a quote.

Stuck for what to get the person who has everything?

A Gift Voucher for a creative photowalk could be the answer. I’ll supply you with an attractive Gift Voucher and card, valid for one year from the date of issue.

It’s difficult knowing where to go to get the kind of tuition you want – there are so many people out there offering help with photography and it’s hard to tell who’s going to be the right tutor for you.

I have considerable teaching experience gained over many years as a tutor in many different subject areas. Teaching is my passion and I’m told I’m good at it, have a lot of patience, and help people feel confident. I get a real buzz from helping people get closer to taking the kind of pictures they dream of.

While there are a great many very accomplished photographers offering tuition, not all of them understand how to explain things in a way that works for you or are able to put themselves into the position of someone who’s new to the craft.

If you’re a beginner you might be feeling a bit anxious, or maybe you’ve tried to learn the basics before and ended up feeling more confused than when you started out. There’s a lot to take on board at the beginning, and one of my strengths is in being able to get information across clearly and without over-use of jargon.

I can really empathise with that feeling of being overwhelmed by it all, and I keep it as simple as possible without making it simplistic. I’ll do my best to go the extra mile for you, and am happy to give continued email support after your session.

Here’s what some previous students have said.

So, thanks for another great class. I really feel we get value for money, you tell us so much. Plus, that is the first time in 40 years I’ve understood F numbers.
Eileen, Westgate-on-sea

Just wanted to drop you a quick note to say thank you very much for Tuesday – it was a great afternoon & we both got a lot out of the tutorial you gave. If I knew I could pick up so many tips so quickly I’d have booked on the course a long time ago!
Carolyn, London

Thank you for a great photography day, especially how simply you were able to explain everything and the patience. I even have photographs and not just snapshots. (And, in reply to an email from me asking if I could quote this) Of course you may use my opening sentences. If you wish, please add something around that you were very good company and do have a very special way of explaining and demystifying how to use a DSLR to look creatively through the lens. I really had a great day.
Mark, Canterbury

Gilly – many thanks for Sunday’s session. It was really excellent, and we cannot wait to buy our first DSLR (Unfortunately our impending house move might mean this is a few months away!). Your patient explanations were brilliant, and even the cold and wet weather did not take away from it all.
Chris and Laura, London

Gilly, Many thanks for a very rewarding morning. I learnt a great deal and, hopefully, I’m now on the road to using my camera more effectively. I thoroughly enjoyed the time spent working with you.
Mary, Canterbury

I just wanted to say that it was a great course yesterday (just as great as the beginners course). Thank you for your help. Please let me know when you are running other courses or undertaking private tuition as I do want to master the art of taking good photographs.
Julie, Canterbury

It has been a very productive day for me. I have learned a lot and I am determined to have a go at least two or three times a week with the camera – it makes such a difference doing the practical stuff. It was shame about the weather but hey ho that is our climate!
Sheila, Whitstable

Thanks for a very informative day yesterday. I feel that I have benefited greatly from your explanations and demonstrations.
Steve, Canterbury

Jo and I wanted to thank you for the day on the 21st November. We really enjoyed it and I learnt a lot more than I thought I would!
Charlie and Jo, Whitstable

Good morning Gilly, Many thanks for the training yesterday. It was just what I needed.
Nick, Herne Bay

I recommend anyone new to lensbaby get some tuition. Gilly was a mine of information, ideas/suggestions, she prepared some hints & tips notes for me and recommended a book (which I’ve ordered) that’s going to be my holiday reading, and I’m going to try and use the lensbaby as much as possible in Malta.
Lynn, London

I also work for Hairy Goat Photography in London; here are a couple of extracts on Trip Advisor from reviews of sessions I taught for the company:

My tutor, Gilly, was brilliant. I am a know-a-bit beginner and she was both patient and sensitive to what I wanted to get out of the day and made me feel quite happy to ask stupid and repeated questions.

The tuition I received was fantastic – pitched perfectly and very well explained. We then headed off into the city for a walk around to practice my newly acquired skills and I got some great shots which I’m really pleased with.
